Now,adultsarehopingforanswerslike,IwanttobeanastronautorI
wanttobeaneurosurgeon,you’readultsinyourimaginations.
Kids,they’remostlikelytoanswerwithpro-skateboarder,surfer
mylittlebrother,andhesaid,riously
dude,I’m10,Ihavenoidea,probablyapro-skier,let’sgogetsome
icecream.
See,uskidsaregoingtoanswersomethingwe’restokedon,what
wethinkiscool,whatwehaveexperiencewith,andthat’stypicallythe
oppositeofwhatadultswanttohear.
Butifyouaskalittlekid,sometimesyou’llgetthebestanswer,
somethingsosimple,rowup,I
wanttobehappy.
Forme,whenIgrowup,IwanttocontinuetobehappylikeIam
now.I’mstokedtobehereatTedEx,Imean,I’vebeenwatchingTedvideos
foraslongasIcanremember,butIneverthoughtI’dmakeitonthe
,Ijustbecameateenager,andlikemostteenage
boys,Ispendmostofmytimewondering,howdidmyroomgetsomessyall
onitsown.
DidItakeashowertoday?Andthemostperplexingofall,howdo
Igetgirlstolikeme?Neurosciencessaythattheteenagebrainispretty
weird,ourprefrontalcortexisunderdeveloped,butweactuallyhavemore
neuronsthanadults,whichiswhywecanbesocreative,andimpulsive
andmoodyandgetbummedout.
Butwhatbumsmeoutistoknowthat,alotofkidstodayarejust
wishingtobehappy,tobehealthy,tobesafe,notbullied,andbeloved

bewhenyougrowup?Theyjustassumethatyou’llautomaticallybehappy
andhealthy.
Well,maybethat’snottheca,gotoschool,gotocollege,get
ajob,getmarried,boom,thenyou’llbehappy,right?Youdon’tem
tomakelearninghowtobehappyandhealthyapriorityinourschools,
it’somekids,itdoesn’texistsatall?
Butwhatifwedidn’tmakeitparate?Whatifwebadeducationon
thestudyandpracticeofbeinghappyandhealthy,becauthat’swhat
itis,apractice,andasimplepracticeatthat?
Educationisimportant,butwhyisbeinghappyandhealthynot
considerededucation,Ijustdon’’vebeenstudyingthe

contribution,rvicetoothers,relationships,recreation,relaxation
andstressmanagement,andreligiousorspiritualinvolvement,yes,got

ButwhatIthoughtwashisbestresponwasthat,muchofeducation
isorientedforbetterorwortowardsmakingalivingratherthanmaking
alife.

EventhoughIwasonlynine,whenmyparentspulledmeoutofthe
schoolsystem,Icanstillremembermymombeingintearswhensomeof
herfriendstoldhershewascrazyanditwasastupididea.
Lookingback,I’mthankfulshedidn’tcavetopeerpressure,and

n,onedayIrealizedwhatIreallylovedaboutShane,
mputerhacker,ativity
andinventionsmadeskiingwhatitistoday,
ofpeoplethinkofhackersasgeekycomputernerdswholiveintheir
parent’sbamentandspreadcomputervirus,butIdon’teitthat
way.
Hackersareinnovators,hackersarepeoplewhochallengeandchange
thesystemstomakethemworkdifferently,tomakethemworkbetter,it’
sjusthowtheythink,it’samindt.
I’mgrowingupinaworldthatneedsmorepeoplewiththehacker
mindt,andnotjustfortechnology,everythingisupforbeinghacked,
evenskiing,herit’sSteveJobs,MarkZuckerberg
orShaneMcConkeyhavingthehackermindtcanchangetheworld.

Healthy,happy,creativityinthehackermindtareallalarge
tHackschooling,Idon’tuanyone
particularcurriculum,andI’mnotdedicatedtoanyoneparticular
approach,Ihackmyeducation.
Itakeadvantageofopportunitiesinmycommunity,andthrougha
dvantageofopportunitiesto
experiencewhatI’mlearning,andI’mnotafraidtolookforshortcuts
’slikearemixoramash-up
’sflexible,opportunistic,anditneverlossightof
makinghappy,healthyandcreativityapriority.
Andhereisthecoolpart,becauit’samindt,notasystem.
Hackschoolingcanbeudanyone,tdoes
myschoollooklike?Well,itlookslikeStarbucksalotofthetime,but
likemostkidsIstudylotofmath,science,’
tudtoliketowritebecaumyteachersmademewriteaboutbutterflies
andrainbows,andIwantedtowriteaboutskiing.
Itwasareliefformygoodfriend’smom,startedtheSquawValley
KidsInstitute,whereIgottowritethroughmyexperiencesandmy
interests,while,connectingwithgreatspeakersfromaroundthenation,
andthatsparkedmyloveofwriting.
Irealizedthatonceyou’remotivatedtolearnsomething,youcan
getalotdoneinashortamountoftime,andonyourown,Starbucksis
gphysicswasfun,welearnedallaboutNewton
andGalileo,andweexperiencedsomebasicphysicsconceptslikekinetic
energythroughexperimentingandmakingmistakes.
MyfavoritewasthegiantNewton’scradlethatwemadeoutofbowling
balls,rimentedwithlotofotherthingslike
bowlingballsandeventgiantjawbreakers.

ProjectDiscovery’sropescourisawesome,andslightlystressful.
Whenyou’re60feetofftheground,youhavetolearnhowtohandleyour
fears,communicateclearly,andmostimportantly,trusteachother.
Communityorganizationsplayabigpartinmyeducation,HighFives
Foundation’sBasicsProgrambeingawareandsafeincriticalsituations.
WespentadaywiththeSquawValleySkiPatroltolearnmoreaboutmountain
safety,thenthenextdayweswitchedtoscienceofsnow,weatherand
avalanches.
Butmostimportantly,welearnedthatmakingbaddecisionsputsyou
houldtalk,wellbringshistorytolife.
Youstudyafamouscharacterinhistory,andsothatyoucanstandonstage
andperformasthatcharacter,andansweranyquestionabouttheir
lifetime.
Inthisphoto,youeAlCaponeandBobMarleygettinggrilledwith
questionsatthehistoricalPiper’sOperaHouinVirginiaCity,the
samestagewhereHarryHoudinigothisstart.
Timeandnatureisreallyimportanttome,it’scalm,quietand
onedayaweek,outsideallday.
AtmyFoxWalkersclass,ourgoalistobeabletosurviveinthe
ntolistentonature,welearnto
noursurroundings,andI’vegainedaspiritualconnectiontonature
that,Ineverknewexisted.
Butthebestpartisthatwegettomakespears,bowsandarrows,
fireswithjustabowdrillandsurvivalsheltersforthesnowynights
goutattheMomentFactorywheretheyhandmake
skisanddesignclothes,hasreallyinspiredmetoonedayhavemyown
satthefactoryshowedmewhyIneedtobegoodatmath,
becreativeandgetgoodatlling.

SoIgotaninternshipatBigSharkPrinttogetbetteratdesign
nfetchinglunch,scrubbingtoiletsandbreakingtheir
vacuumcleaner,I’mgettingtocontributetoclothingdesign,customizing
plewhoworktherearehappy,healthy,
creative,andstokedtobedoingwhattheyaredoing,thisisbyfarmy
favoriteclass.
So,thisiswhyI’mreallyhappy,powderdays,andit’sagood
metaphorformylife,myeducation,yoneskithis
mountain,likemostpeoplethinkofeducation,everyonewillbeskiing
thesameline,probablythesafestandmostofthepowderwouldgo
untouched.
Ilookatthis,andeathousandpossibilities,droppingthe
corners,shreddingthespine,lookingforachurningfromcliff-to-cliff.
Skiingtomeisfreedom,andsoismyeducation,it’saboutbeingcreative;
doingthingsdifferently,it’saboutcommunityandhelpingeachother.
It’saboutbeinghappyandhealthyamongmyverybestfriends.
