6的意思是作者Edith Wharton 完全了解社会，where代替的是society社会，地点名词。
11：你能把书放回原来的位置么？这句是看懂句子的意思即可得出答案。
12：你还记得她所工作的公司的名字么？这句一是选定语，这个是对the company公司所下的定语，也就是一地点名词的定语从句，当然是选where。然后work in是跟company，一般说在哪工作是用动词in，work at是从事于。。。

伊迪丝·华顿 (Edith Wharton, 1862年1月24日 - 1937年8月11日)，美国女作家。
原名伊迪丝·纽伯·琼斯(Edith Newbold Jones)，是纽约名门望族琼斯家的女儿。她在家中接受了良好的教育，后来多次出国旅行。1885年她和一个比她大13岁的有钱的波士顿人爱德华·华顿结了婚。此人性格虽好，但他们却很少共同之处，几年以后，爱德华患了精神病，最终导致了他们的离婚（1913年），从此以后，伊迪丝长住巴黎，并参加了红十字会，一战后仅回过美国一次，直到1937年去世，葬在凡尔赛。
伊迪丝·华顿的写作特点
华顿与同时代的很多文人、政客保持着良好的关系。包括西奥多·罗斯福、F·斯科特·菲兹杰拉德、海明威以及亨利·詹姆斯等。
伊迪丝·华顿起初是为了排遣上流社会家庭生活的苦闷而开始写作的。她从1880年开始发表小说，1889年第一部短篇小说集问世，获得了意外的成功。1905年长篇小说《快乐之家》出版，使她成了20世纪前20年最受欢迎的美国作家。1920年出版的《纯真年代》(The Age of Innocence）为她获得了普利策奖。她一共写了19部中长篇小说，出版过11本短篇小说集，还有大量的非小说作品。
伊迪丝·华顿和英国女作家简·奥斯丁（1775—1817）同属“风俗小说家”。所谓“风俗小说”，就是指那种如实反映特定的时代、特定的地点、特定的社会阶层的社会风俗、习惯礼仪的小说。伊迪丝·华顿的小说大多数描写她所熟知的纽约上流社会，也就是十九世纪四十年代到七十年代的老纽约旧事。写纽约上流社会，有《快乐之家》、《纯真年代》、《老纽约》这样的杰作，凭借她敏锐的观察和驾驭文字的能力写农村生活，也有《伊坦·弗洛美》那样的名篇。
并非所有的大作家文笔都非常优美，但华顿夫人的文笔是有口皆碑的。抒情的文笔又穿插着微妙的讽刺，构成了华顿夫人突出的文体。

童年时的难以与人相处及后来失败的婚姻造就了伊迪丝坚强的性格，也使她更加自律而勤奋，不但成为畅销作家，亦是优秀作家。在她众多杰出小说中（我竟觉得分不出哪本更优秀），我特别推荐读《乡土风俗》（1913），书中的女主人翁昂汀·斯普拉格（Undine Spragg），野心勃勃，每次征服后都不能满足；还推荐《纯真年代》（1920），故事讲的是19世纪80年代纽约一位男青年犹豫不决的情感纠葛，对初恋情人重新燃起了爱情，而又舍不了未婚妻；另一本推荐的是伊迪丝的第一部畅销书《欢乐之家》（1905），我认为书中女主人翁莉莉·巴特（Lily Bart）是伊迪丝塑造得最细腻的人物。莉莉与贝姬·夏普[76]一样，为了在社会中赢得自己的位置可以不惜一切手段。不同的是，萨克雷试图不让自己、不让读者喜欢那个精力充沛的女冒险家（把她塑造成一位不称职的母亲）；而伊迪丝很明显对莉莉怀有深深的同情，但却无法改变僵硬而挑剔的社会带给她的厄运。
