A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for thewonderful

apple he grew.

一个穷困的农夫有一个朋友，这个朋友因为种了神奇的苹果树而

远近闻名。

One day, his friend gave the farmer a young appletree and

told him to take it home and plant it.

有一天，农夫的这个朋友送给他一棵小苹果树。

The farmer was plead with the gift, but when he got home

he did not know where to plant it.

农夫对这个礼物非常高兴。但当他回到家时，却不知道将它栽在

什么地方。

He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road,

strangers would steal the fruit. If heplanted the tree in one of his

field, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of

theapples. If he planted the tree near his hou, his children

would take the fruit.

他担心他把苹果树栽在路边，陌生人会偷树上的苹果，他把树种

在自己的一块地里，邻居们夜里就会过来偷苹果。他把树栽在自己的

房子边，他的孩子们就会摘苹果。

Finally he planted the tree in his wood where no one could

e it. But without sunlight and goodsoil, the tree soon died.

最后，他把那棵树栽在了林子里，那里没人能看见。但没有阳光

和泥土，树不久就死了。

Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree

in such a poor place."What's thedifference?" the farmer said

angrily. "If I had planted the tree near the road, strangers

wouldhave stolen the fruit.

后来，朋友问农夫他为什么把树栽在那样贫瘠的地方。“那有什

么不一样?”农夫生气地说， “我把苹果树栽在路边，陌生人就会偷树

上的苹果。

If I had planted the tree in one of my field, my neighbors

would have come at night and stolensome of the apples. If I had

planted it near my hou, my own children would have taken

thefruit.

"Yes," said the friend, "but at least someone could have

enjoyed the fruit. Now you not onlyhave robbed everyone of the

fruit, but also you have destroyed a good apple tree!"

Jack Hawkins was the football coach at an American college,

and he was always trying to find good players, but they weren‘t

always smart enough to be accepted by the college.

杰克霍金斯是美国一所学院的橄榄球队教练，他竭力想物色好球

员。但是好球员学业不行，院方不愿录取。

One day the coach brought an excellent young player to the

dean of the college and asked that the student be allowed to

enter without an examination. "Well," the dean said after some

persuasion, "I‘d better ask him a few questions first."

有一天，教练带着一位优秀的年轻球员去见院长，希望院方同意

他免试入学。经过一番劝说后院长说：“那我最好先问问他几个问

题。”

Then he turned to the student and asked him some very easy

questions, but the student didn‘t know any of the answers.

At last the dean said, "Well, what‘s five times ven?"

The student thought for a long time and then answered,

"Thirty-six."

despair, but the coach said earnestly, "Oh, plea let him in, sir!
