I deem mlf as a luk person born ith natural gifts Some of them
are "ordinar", shoed obviousl on math, musi and memor at a
quite earl age and ontinued to rve as parts of m
distintiveness as I gre up some of them are "extraordinar ",
for example, m original interest in philosoph. It is hard to
believe to some that hat I have speulated about at the age of
five oinided ith some of the thoughts in Jean-Paul Sartre's
"L'Etre at le Neant".
Wh eletronis?
It still remains a mster to me ho I left hildhood dream of bee
an astronomer and hose eletroni engineering as m ollege major
instead. Not knoing muh about iruits as about stars at that time.
I emed to be simpl allured b the idea of designing a guidane
sstem for the spae shuttle. Five ears of inquir into the
eletroni orld proved that m hoie as right. I as pletel
infatuated ith suh a field-so profound and vigorous that one is
onl limited b hisher imagination.
What's done?
Anxious to find out hat "eletronis" reall means. I began doing
laborator rearh as earl as from the third ear. First at the
Miroave Lab, doing iruits simulation and ur interfae design.
Generall speaking. Works during that period ere fragmentar ,
but the have given me suffiient experiene on C. C++, Windos
programming and interfae design, hih laid a sold foundation for
m future stud.
Later, to explore something ne, I applied to join the Multimedia
Lab, an "interative "plae sponsored b Prof Xing Li, I beame
familiar ith UNIX sstem and did X Windos interfae design
for some time Probabl beau some interesting points in m design,
I as offered an opportunit b Prof Li to join the "avelet rearh
group". Intending to develop avelet appliations .
That as a turning point in m ork. Wavelet is a brand-ne area
ith modern mathematial bakground, free spae of imagination and,
a little but philosophial olor that totall interested me I
arried out a experiment of appling Embedded. Zero
tree Wavelet algorithm to speeh oding EZW algorithm as
originall developed in image oding, aiming at the
multi-resolution transmission of pitures. Its effiien greatl
depends on the amount of zerotrees the soure produed . B properl
quantized, speeh samples an be expeted to generate a
onsiderable number of zerotrees due to its spetrum
harateristis . In m experiment, different kinds of speeh soures
have been tested and an average pression ratio of 8 I as ahieved,
ith no pereptible distortions Compared ith previous oding
methods, the result is enouraging, for the benefits are gained
through a rather oni proedure doing enoding and deoding is
as shematiall as doing a ross -ord puXXle Moreover. What I have
done is atuall superfiial. There still exist at
least several means to improve it, for example, the appliation
of non-even quantizer, avelet paket, the definition of a higher
dimensional struture like "zeroforest ". the letion of an
appropriate avelet ba, et.. The improvement of the algorithm
is inluded in m present rea's on going
I am no orking on m diploma thesis. The topi is "A Rearh of
Multi-resolution Coding of information and Relevant
Transmission Protools", inluding multi-resolution oding of
images. Wavelet oding of audio signals , and an integrated demo
sstem.
Speial interest
More than enjoing the oding game, another fasinating point I
found in speeh or image proessing is the bination of signal
theor ith neuropsolog and ognitive siene. It as disovered as
I as studing the auditor model. When a ries of plex
phsiologial funtions are modeled and mathematiall abstrated ,e
found out that the ohlea is atuall a living avelet filter, hile

What to pursue?
Conluded form above, m rearh experienes onentrate on speeh
and image proessing, ith an emphasis on oding shemes and
a speial interest on the appliation of knoledge in biologial
and ognitive siene. What I am going to do is to develop m
interest on speeh or image proessing, preferabl ith an
interdisiplinar approah. Beau of the rapid advanes and the
ative environment of suh a field in the United States. I am sure
that an institution ith a orld reputation on
eletrial engineering like ours is m first hoie. Hoever ,due to
m broad interest in eletronis and other branhes of learning,
there is alas no limitations on speifi programs.

Upon reeiving a dotoral degree in the States, I ill go bak to m
mother ountr, not onl for the beloved land and people, but also
for the temptation of eastern philosoph. The idea hit upon
me hen I aught sight of the graphi of avelet deposition that
is surprisingl similar to the anient Taoist interpretation
of the generation of universe . It has been idel aepted that
eastern thought ould pla an important role in future siene and
I believe the instillation of modern estern ideas ould aelerate
the proess. As the dendant of the Orient. I am illing to make
some useful attempts.
