Sometimes you’ll hear people say that you can’t love
others until you love yourlf. Sometimes you’ll hear people say
that you can’t expect someone el to love you until you love
yourlf. Which statement do you prefer? Either way, you’ve got
to love yourlf first and this can be tricky. Sure we all know that
we’re the apple of our parents’ eyes, and that our Grandmas
think we’re great talents and our Uncle Roberts think that we
will go to the Olympics, but sometimes it’s probably struggling
to think such nice thoughts about ourlves. If you find that
believing in yourlf is a challenge, it is time for you to move a
step to a positive lf-image and learn to love yourlf.
Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourlf. This
image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you
talk and the way you think. Interestingly, statistics show that our
lf-images are often quite different from the images others hold
about us. Unfortunately, most of the images are more negative
than they should be and it ems we are much stricter with
ourlves. Thus changing the way you think about yourlf is the
key to strengthening the confidence and changing your lf-
image and your whole world.
The best way to defeat a passive lf-image and stay
confident is to step back and decide to stress your success.
That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great
things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.
It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative
lf-image becau you are usually too strict with yourlf or too
stubborn and can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you
e about yourlf. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change
of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly becau you
aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak
becau you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If
you think you’re dull becau you don’t wear the latest trends,
go straight to a shop to buy a few new clothes. But remember,
just becau you think it doesn’t mean it’s true.
The best way to get rid of a negative lf-image is to realize
that your image is far too subjective, and to actively convince
yourlf of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think
and the style of doing things and working on tho you need to
improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive lf-
image. When you can pat (拍) yourlf on the back, you’ll know
you’re well on your way. Never submit to your negative lf-
image! Good luck!

第II卷 (满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5个小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
Last week, my granddaughter started kindergarten, and I
wished her success. I was lying. What I actually wish for her is
failure. I believe in the power of failure.
Success is boring. Success is proving that you can do
something that you already know you can do, or doing
something correctly the first time, which can often be an
uncertain victory. First-time success is usually a piece of luck.
First-time failure, by contrast, is expected. It is the natural order
of things.
Failure is how we learn. I have been told of an African phra
describing a good cook as she who has broken many pots. If
you’ve spent enough time in the kitchen to have broken a lot of
pots, probably you know a lot about cooking. I once had a dinner
with a group of chefs, and they spent time comparing knife
wounds and burn scars. They knew how much certainty their
failures gave them.
I earn my living by writing a daily newspaper column. Each
week I am aware that
one column is going to be the worst column. I don’t t out
to write it. I try my best every day and I have learned to cherish
that column. Often in my columns of poor quality, I am trying to
get through something I’ve never done before, something I’m
not even sure can be done.
My younger daughter is a trapeze artist (荡秋千演员). She
spent three years putting together an act. She did it successfully
for years. There was no reason for her to change the act, but she
did anyway. She said she was no longer learning anything new
and she was bored.
So she changed the act. She risked failure and public
embarrassment in order to feed her soul. My granddaughter is a
perfectionist. She will feel her failures. I hope I can tell her, though,
that it isn’t the end of the world. Indeed, with luck, it is the
beginning.
56. What’s the writer’s lie to his granddaughter? (No more
than 6 words)
57. What does the writer want to express by giving the
experience of different people? (No more than 15 words)
58. What does the underlined phra “by contrast” mean?
(No more than 5 words)
59. Why does the writer’s daughter change the act? (No
more than 10 words)
60. Do you agree with the last two ntences “I hope I can
tell her, though, that it isn’t the end of the world. Indeed, with
luck, it is the beginning.”? Why or Why not? (No more than 25
words)
