从上述例子可以看出英语分数的表示是由基数词和序数词构成，要掌握分

数的用法就要掌握以下几个方面的内容：

一、基数词变序数词

大都在基数词后加—th。

下列例外：

eight eighth 8th

nine ninth 9th

twenty twentieth 20th

twenty-one twenty-first 21st

从上面可以看出基数词变序数词在无规律中可以找规律，下面就是变法口

雇：一变first,二变cond，三变third，四以后都有th结尾，八去t，九去e，

ve不要用f替，y改I，th前面有个e。

记住了这则口诀以后，就能很容易地把序数词写出来。

二、分数表示法

1．分子为基数词，分母为序数词，即“母叙（序）子饥（基）”，但要注意

分子大于“1”分母要加上“s”。

如：2/3读作two-thirds 5/12读作five-twelfths

1/3读作a/one third 1/4读作a/one fourth或a/one quarter1/2读作

a/one half不说：one cond

在数学中可都用基数词读：例如：1/3读作one over three

2.百分数用“%”或“percent"。

3．比较复杂的分数可以直接用基数词。

如：99/199读作：ninety-nine over one hundred and ninety-nine

4．“十个里面有一个”，“四个里面有一个”可用“数词（+名词）+介词（in，

out of,of等）+数词（+名词）”这种结构。如：In some parts of Britain, one person

in ten，by the age of thirty，has no teeth left.

三、分数的运用

1．分数作前置定语时总要用连字符。如：

a one-third mile三分之一英里

a three-quarter majority四分之三的多数(quarter用单数)

We were short of two-thirds majority.

我们不够三分之二的多数。（用复数形式thirds）

注：分数相当于名词时用不用连字符皆可。如：

three-quarters (three quarters) of a mile

2.如果上下文交代清楚而且交谈双方都知道所指什么，分数可作代词，不带

of和名词词组。

Two thirds were away.

One fifth are appointed by the Regional Health Authority.

3.在英语中，分数做主语时，谓语动词的数一定要与分数后面的名词取得一

致。

如：Two thirds of the students were late foday.

Two thirds of the work has not been done yet.

Half the world's telephone calls are made in English.

Three quarters of the world's books and newspapers are written in English.

4.当“one in (our of)+数词”这种表达分数意义的结构做主语时，谓语动词可

用复数或单数。如：More than one is four American Children are growing up

insingle-parent homes.

四分之一以上的美国儿童是在单亲家庭中长大的。

One后有名词时，谓语动词用单数的情况似乎多一些。

In some parts of Britain, one person in ten, by the age of thirty, has noteeth left.

5.形容词可用于限定词和分数词之间。如：I read the first half of the book.

注：分数ahalf与of连用作量词时通常只用half，ahalf和onehalf极少使用。

They lost half of their pay.

Half与整数连用时可用限定词a。如：One and a half centuries如果用a代替

one，and和分数则置于名词之后。如：
