The Dragon Boat Festival, the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, has

had a history of more than 2,000 years. It is usually in June in the

Gregorian calendar.

There are many legends about the evolution of the festival, the

most popular of which is in commemoration of Qu Yuan (340-278

BC). Qu Yuan was minister of the State of Chu and one of

China's earliest poets. In face of great pressure from the

powerful Qin State, he advocated enriching the country and

strengthening its military forces so as to fight against the Qin.

However, he was oppod by aristocrats headed by Zi Lan, and later

depod and exiled by King Huai.

In his exiled days, he still cared much for his country and people

and compod immortal poems including Li Sao (The Lament), Tian

Wen (Heavenly Questions) and Jiu Ge (Nine Songs), which had

far-reaching influences. In 278 BC, he heard the news that Qin

troops had finally conquered Chu's capital, so he finished his

last piece Huai Sha (Embracing Sand) and plunged himlf into the

Miluo River, clasping his arms to a large stone. The day happened to

be the 5th of the 5th month in the Chine lunar calendar.

After his death, the people of Chu crowded to the bank of the river

to pay their respects to him. The fishermen sailed their boats up and

down the river to look for his body. People threw into the water

zongzi (pyramid-shaped glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in reed or

bamboo leaves) and eggs to divert possible fish or shrimp from

attacking his body. An old doctor poured a jug of reaglar wine

(Chine liquor asoned with realgar) into the water, hoping to

turn all aquatic beasts drunk. That's why people later followed

the customs such as dragon boat racing, eating zongzi and drinking

realgar wine on that day.

Dragon boat racing is an indispensable part of the festival, held all

over the country. As the gun is fired, people will e racers in

dragon-shaped canoes pulling the oars harmoniously and hurriedly,

accompanied by rapid drums, speeding toward their destination.

Folk tales say the game originates from the activities of eking Qu

Yuan's body, but experts, after painstaking and meticulous

rearch, conclude that dragon boat racing is a mi-religious,

mi-entertaining program from the Warring States Period (475-221

BC). In the following thousands of years, the game spread to Japan,

Vietnam and Britain as well as China's Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Now dragon boat racing has developed into an aquatic sports item

which features both Chine tradition and modern sporting spirit. In

1980, it was listed into the state sports competition programs and

has since been held every year. The award is called "Qu Yuan

Cup."

Zongzi is an esntial food of the Dragon Boat Festival. It is said

that people ate them in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC).

In early times, it was only glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in reed

or other plant leaves and tied with colored thread, but now the

fillings are more diversified, including jujube and bean paste, fresh

meat, and ham and egg yolk. If time permits, people will soak

glutinous rice, wash reed leaves and wrap up zongzi themlves.

Otherwi, they will go to shops to buy whatever stuff they want.

The custom of eating zongzi is now popular in North and South

Korea, Japan and Southeast Asian nations.

On Dragon Boat Festival, parents also need to dress their children

up with a perfume pouch. They first w little bags with colorful silk

cloth, then fill the bags with perfumes or herbal medicines, and

finally string them with silk threads. The perfume pouch will be

hung around the neck or tied to the front of a garment as an

ornament. They are said to be able to ward off evil.

The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is

celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the

Chine calendar. For thousands of years, the festival has been

marked by eating zong zi (glutinous rice(糯米)wrapped to form a

pyramid using bamboo or reed leaves) and racing dragon boats.

The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in

the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes.

Thisregatta(舟会)commemorates the death of Qu Yuan , an

honest minister who is said to have committed suicide by drowning

himlf in a river. Qu was a minister of the State of Chu situated in

prent-day Hunan and Hubei provinces, during theWarring States

Period(475-221BC)(战国时期). He was upright, loyal and highly

esteemed for his wi counl that brought peace and prosperity to

the state. However, when a dishonest and corrupt prince vilified Qu,

he was disgraced and dismisd from office. Realizing that the

country was now in the hands of evil and corrupt officials, Qu

grabbed a large stone and leapt into the Miluo River on the fifth day

of the fifth month. Nearby fishermen rushed over to try and save

him but were unable to even recover his body. Thereafter, the state

declined and was eventually conquered by the State of Qin.

The people of Chu who mourned the death of Qu threw rice into

the river to feed his ghost every year on the fifth day of the fifth

month. But one year, the spirit of Qu appeared and told the

mourners that a hugereptile(爬行动物)in the river had stolen the

rice. The spirit then advid them to wrap the rice in silk and bind it

with five different-colored threads before tossing it into the river.

During the Duanwu Festival, a glutinous rice pudding called zong zi

is eaten to symbolize the rice offerings to Qu. Ingredients such as

beans, lotus eds(莲子),chestnuts(栗子), pork fat and the golden

yolk of a salted duck egg are often added to the glutinous rice. The

pudding is then wrapped with bamboo leaves, bound with a kind of

raffia and boiled in salt water for hours.

The dragon-boat races symbolize the many attempts to rescue and

recover Qu's body. A typical dragon boat ranges from 50-100

feet in length, with a beam of about 5.5 feet, accommodating two

paddlers ated side by side.

A wooden dragon head is attached at the bow, and a dragon tail at

thestern(船尾). A banner hoisted on a pole is also fastened at the

stern and the hull is decorated with red, green and blue scales

edged in gold. In the center of the boat is a canopied shrine behind

which the drummers,gong(铜锣)beaters andcymbal(铙钹)players

are ated to t the pace for the paddlers. There are also men

positioned at the bow to t off firecrackers, toss rice into the water

and pretend to be looking for Qu. All of the noi and pageantry

creates an atmosphere of gaiety and excitement for the participants

and spectators alike. The races are held among different clans,

villages and organizations, and the winners are awarded medals,

banners, jugs of wine and festive meals.

A Chine holiday is gaining worldwide popularity

Some holidays are so much fun that they catch on outside of their

culture. The most obvious example is probably Christmas, which is

celebrated around the world by people who arent even Christian.

Similarly, in recent years, the Dragon Boat Festival has moved

beyond China to become an international holiday celebrated by

people who may know little about the holidays origins

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of three major Chine holidays,

along with the Spring and Moon Festivals. Of the three, it is possibly

the oldest, dating back to the Warring States Period in 227 B.C. The

festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a minister in the rvice of the Chu

Emperor. Despairing over corruption at court, Qu threw himlf into

a river. Townspeople jumped into their boats and tried in vain to

save him. Then, hoping to distract hungry fish from his body, the

people scattered rice on the water

Over the years, the story of Qus demi transformed into the

traditions of racing dragon boats and eating zongzi a kind of rice

wrapped in bamboo leaves. The races have certainly captured the

imagination of people from all over the world. Every spring there

are nearly 60 dragon boat races held outside of China in cities from

Vancouver to Sydney, from Gdask, Poland to Cape Town, South

Africa. Canada alone has nearly 50 dragon boat teams and Germany

has nearly 30

So what is it about the Dragon Boat Festival that appeals to

foreigners? Its an unusual sport, says one racer from Germany.

Its not like everybodys doing it. Thats one of the reasons that

theres such great team spirit in a dragon boat team everybody

feels like were doing something special And what about the

zongzi? Ehhh, theyre not bad, I guess, he says. Something

of an acquired taste. I just havent really acquired it yet
