Just a few years out of law school, I decided that I wanted to write

fictions. The only thing I had ever published before was a law-review article. I had made great

efforts to write when I came home at night after work, but I was too tired. I decided to quit my job.

I began my new life on a February morning. I sat down at my kitchen table at 730 am and

made a resolution. Every day I would write until lunchtime. Then I would lie down on the floor

for 20 minutes to rest my mind. After that, I would return to work for a few more hours.

In my first year, I sold two stories. Then I wrote a novel, but I thought it wasnt good enough,

so I ended up putting it in a drawer. My cond novel, Billy Lynns Long Halftime Walk, was

published to glowing reviews and received the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction.

My success sounds like a familiar story, but actually it was far from sudden. I quit my job,

and for every story I published in tho years, I had at least 30 rejections. The novel that I put

away in the drawer took my four years. My breakthrough came in 2006, 18 years after I first sat

down to write at my kitchen table.

Sometimes genius (天才) is just the thing that comes out after 20 years of working at your

kitchen. Also, doing something truly creative requires the energy of youth. Orson Welles made his

masterpiece, Citizen Kan, at 25. T. S. Eliot wrote The Love Song of JAfred Prufrock at 23.

When its five oclock, people leave their office. The length of the

workday, for many workers, is defined by time. They leave when the clocks tells them theyre

done.

The days, the time is everywhere: not just on clocks or watches, but on cellphones and

computers. That may be a bad thing, particularly at work. New rearch shows that clock bad

work schedules hinder creativity.

Clock-timers organize their day by blocks of minutes and hours. For example: a meeting

from 9 am to 10 am, rearch from 10 am to noon, etc. On the other hand, task-timers have a list

of things they want to accomplish. They work down the list, each task starts when the previous

task is completed. It is said that all of us employ a mix of both the types of planning.

What, then, are the effects of thinking about time in the different ways? Does one make us

more productive? Better at the tasks at hand? Happier? In experiments conducted by Tamar Avnet

and Anne-Laure Sellier, they had participants organize different activities from project planning,

holiday shopping, to yogaby time or to-do list to measure how they performed under “ clock

time” vs task time”They found clock timers to be more efficient(有效率的) but less happy

becau they felt little control over their lives. Task timers are happier and more creative, but less

productive. They tend to enjoy the moment when something good is happening, and ize

opportunities that come up.

The rearchers argue that task-bad organizing tends to be undervalued and

under-supported in the business culture. This might be a small change to the way we view work

and the office, but the rearchers argue that it challenges a widespread characteristic of the

economy; work organized by clock time. While most people will still probably need, and be, to

some extent, clock-timers, task-bad timing should be ud when performing a job that requires

more creativity. Itll make tho tasks easier, and the task-doers will be happier.

8What does the author say a clock-bad work?

AIt makes workers very tired.

BIt reminds workers to leave on time.

CIt makes workers aware of the precious time.

DIt may have a bad effect on the creativity.

由第二段That may be a bad thingparticularly at work。

9What does the underlined word “hinder” in Paragraph 2 mean?

CIncrea. DValue.

shows that clock bad work schedules hinder creativity.

作没有好处。由此可知这种工作方式对于创造性不好。分析四个选项ABlock阻碍;

10What did Tamar Avnet and Anne-Laure Sellier find in their experiments about

clock-timers?

AThey ize opportunities as they come up.

BThey always get their work done in time.

CThey tend to be more productive.

DThey can control their lives.

由第四段They found clock timers to be more efficient but less

happy becau they felt little control over their lives. Task timers are happier and more

creative, but less productive.

项中的be more productive就是对be more efficient的替换。]

11What do the rearchers suggest?

ATask-bad timing is preferred for doing creative work.

BIt is important to keep a balance between work and life.

CPerforming creative jobs tends to make workers happier.

DA scientific standard should be adopted in job evaluation.

最后一段 While most people will still probably need, and be, to

some extent, clock-timers, task-bad timing should be ud when performing a job that

requires more creativity. Itll make tho tasks easier, and the task-doers will be happier.
