"Long time no e." is a very interesting ntence. When I first read this ntence from an American friend's
e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation of the Chine greeting with wrong English grammar and
structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprid to believe her.
Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did rearch onGoogle. com. To my surpri, there are over 60 thousand
web pages containing "Long time no e." Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans
u daily. Interestingly, if you type this phra in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar
needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish ntence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan's
movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chine detective named
"Charlie Chan" on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chine wisdom by quoting
Confucius. "Long time no e." was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, "Long time no e." became a popular
expression in America thanks to the popularity of the movies.
Some scholars compare America to a hugemelting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and
they change the colour and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed
pot.
You can have some examples from other countries such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japane, and déjà
vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chine culture more and more nowadays, I
believe more Chine words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American's melting pot
keeps adding richness and flavour.

A. The Chinglish expression "Long time no e."
B. So many literal translations of the expressions ud in America.

B. Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.
C. The huge melting pot greatly affects all kinds of languages.
D. Hollywood made "Long time no e." popular.
7. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Some Chine expressions are introduced into English.
B. You'll not be surprid at a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant in America.
C. Some American expressions can be ud in China.
D. American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.
C
Conducting interviews for news stories is an important skill for any journalist. To start, do as much rearch as
you can and prepare a list of questions to ask. Once the interview starts, try to develop a rapport(融洽的关系)
with your "source"—anyone a journalist interviews, but don't waste your time. If your source starts to talk about
things that are clearly of no u to you, don't be afraid to gently but firmly turn the conversationback to the topic
at hand.
It's an old debate among journalists: Which works better when interviewing a source, taking notes (the
old-fashioned way) or using a castte or digital voice recorder? Both have their advantages and disadvantages. A
reporter's notebook and a pen or pencil are the easy-to-u, time-honored tools of the interviewing trade, while
recorders enable you to get everything someone says word for word. Which works better? It depends on what
kind of story you're doing.
Many beginning reporters complain that with a notepad and pen, they can never take down everything a
source says in an interview. But you don't have to note everything down. Keep in mind that you're probably not
going to u everything they say in your story. So don't worry if youlet slipa few things.
So you've done a long interview with a source, you have pages of notes, and you're ready to write. But
chances are you'll only be able to choo a few quotes from that information collected directly from the source.
Which ones should you u? Reporters often talk about using only "good" quotes for their stories, but what does
this mean? Broadly speaking, when someone says something interesting, and says it in an interesting way, that can
make a good quote.
8. What is a journalist advid to do during an interview?
A. Be gentle with the source. B. Carry on a long conversation.
C. Make the conversation interesting. D. Prevent the conversation being off-topic.
9. What do the underlined words "let slip" in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. give away B. leave out C. get rid of D. take up
10. What is considered as a good quote for a reporter?
A. A direct quote. B. An important point of view.
C. A piece of basic information. D. Something funny a source says interestingly.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The job of a journalist. B. The process of interviewing.
C Some facts about interviewing. D. The relationship between a journalist and a source.
D
Did you know that the average child has heard the word "no" over 20,000 times before they turn the age of
three? Ironically, it is also around this time that children begin to develop enough personal character to refu to
obey. The "terrible twos" are categorized by a lack of understanding. Somewhere between three and four, children
begin to acquire the skills to reason. It is during this time they watch how other children and adults reason. If
we're not careful, the children will watch us model a world of "NOs".
By the time a person turns eighteen, how many times have they been told no? I haven't found any studies
that even attempted to track this statistic, but I'm sure if the number is 20,000 by three, then at eighteen that
number has multiplied. You can do the math.
Anyway, I think I know why we say no. We say no to protect. We say no to direct. We say no to stop potential
confusion. However, do we sometimes say no just for the sake of saying no? Do we say no becau we have
internalized(内在化)all of the "NOs" we've heard over the years and we feel it is finally our time to say no to
someone el?
The internalized no can damage the growth process of dreams in infancy as quickly as it can weaken a
three-year-old. And we wonder why we run intopeople with big, un-accomplished dreams who have a bit of a chip
on their shoulder. They have to take on the 20,000 NOs. However, the thing that keeps them going is the
possibility of the power of ONE YES! Just as it only takes one book to make a writer a Pulitzer Prize Winner, it only
takes one word to change the cour of your day. That word is YES!
12. What do we know about two- year- olds?
A. They understand well. B. They often say no to others.
C. They think logically. D. They don't do all they're told.
13. What effect does saying no have on children?
A. They lo all their dreams. B. They aren't easy to succeed.
C. They don't make mistakes. D. They never say yes to others.
14. Which word best describes the author's attitude to a world of "NOs"?
A. Tolerant. B. Disapproving. C. Favorable. D. Carefree.
15. What is the text?
A. A how-to guide. B. A survey report. C. An opinion essay. D. A
short story.
